[ Diefenbacker's interest isn't one-sided; after following Fraser closer to the fire, he ends up staring at the animal for a little too long, unfamiliarity and cautiousness making him hesitate. Eventually, he takes a seat (definitely not the one closest to the animal), then looks again to Fraser when he starts talking about La'an.

Just thinking about her brings a small smile to his lips. He can imagine it easily, a little too easily, her sitting where he does now, chatting with Fraser by the fire. ]

[ What transpired there— vague, but Jim knows why. He lets out a breath. ]

In a way, that's a relief to hear. So I don't have to offer a whole explanation about where I came from, or how I knew her. [ He figures she must have gone back to her own world and met another version of himself. But it's not really the same thing, is it? ]

I'm so sorry, [ he offers, and if a trace of pain seeps into his voice with the next words, he does his best to tone it down. ] When she died, it must've been... very difficult.
