The reality of the situation dawns upon him really quickly. Because-- yes, of course he instantly knows the other is lying. Billy feels like he'd be able to tell when Hickey is lying with his eyes closed by now, and even more so when all the signs point towards it. Hickey may have spent a lot of time trapping rabbits over the past few months, but game is scarce right now. Billy has heard as much from Hickey, he's heard other people talking about it. There's absolutely no way he would have caught more than one rabbit, and that bag looks too large to contain just the meat you could scrape off one of those small things. And Hickey would have no reason to lie about it if he caught prey larger than a rabbit.
Aside from one very specific kind. Billy thinks back to their talk after the fight with Jopson, when Hickey had confessed as to what the group had done to Goodsir's body back home after having found him dead.
Billy doesn't even realise he's been holding his breath until this moment, and he finally - slowly - exhales.
".. you came back to share with me?"
Step by step. There are a lot of questions Billy does not want to ask, because it's just easier not to. He knows what this is. Hickey knows what this is. Billy is pretty sure Hickey even knows Billy isn't oblivious or dumb enough to fall for that lie. Neither of them need to speak it out loud.
The question that instead matters is one of intent. If he'd view this as negatively as possible, he'd think this is just Hickey trying to make him complicit.
After all these months together though, Billy isn't so inclined to think that way anymore. Maybe Hickey did bring him it because he cares. (Because he told Billy he'd take care of him.)

Like a cat bringing you a dead bird.
