Jane's answer is automatic. She knows she uses people. But she also knows that's part of what's...wrong...with her. What's not normal.

"No," she says, without looking at him. The fire is reflected in her eyes, her gaze hollow. "No, I don't. I think that's what people like you and me tell ourselves so we can feel better about the way we are. But I don't think it's true." Jesse doesn't really use people, after all. Not like she does.

She finally looks over at Tom, trying to see how he reacts to that. He's still a bit of an enigma in some ways, even if she thinks she's figuring him out.
