[A few days after putting the ad up on the bulletin board, the promised evening has arrived. Ruby has a banner hanging up on the patio of her cabin that reads “GIRLS NIGHT” and every once in awhile she can be seen at the door checking for new arrivals, or poking her head up at a window to do the same.

Her cabin is interesting to say the very least. She did her best to clean up all the clutter but it's pretty obvious she isn't exactly the cleanest person in town. Her giant scythe and snowboard are hanging by the door. And there's a green gem sword on display above her fireplaces' mantle with a little hand carved plaque that reads “The Protector of Mantle.” There's also a framed photograph of her looking a couple years younger with her team from home. The kitchen is a bit of mess with a few obvious scorch marks, melted bits on the counter, and just signs that there had been more than one fire in there.

But she had managed to gather up as much as she could for the big party. Including a handful of basic snacks like cookies, chips, and whatever she scrounge up that didn't require any actual cooking skills. There are a handful of games like Risk, Connect 4, and a partially torn up game of twister. There's even an old red and blue boom box playing some hits from the 80's and 90's courtesy of Kate Marsh like Eye of the Tiger, Can't Touch This, I Don't Want To Miss a Thing, If You Want To Be my Lover, and Hit Me Baby, One More time, and many more!]

I see. [Clearly it's a bit of a sore spot.] A flying city sounds amazing, but as you say, I'd imagine living underneath it is a different story. [Just having the city’s waste dumped on you every day would be bad enough.]

Yes. As things stand now an expedition seems like an unnecessary risk. Someday, we may have no choice if the resource situation here worsens.

But that's no topic for a party.

[Sometimes it's not directly your fault, but your actions lead to the floating city crashing into city below it. That was something Ruby had to live with.]

It was amazing, in it's own right.

[She'll leave it there for now and tap her chin in thought.]

Yeah, for now. But it might be something we can prepare for if necessary. If nothing else we can get a better lay of the land around us. That might be a bit more handy immediate future.

[And there's a moment where she considers what else to talk about.]

Okay. Well I've told you a bit about my home. How about you? What was Norway like outside of cold?

[meadqueen]

I grew up in a small village on the south coast. It was beautiful. I could spend days at a time climbing and hunting in the mountains, or sailing the fjords. When I married, I sailed northwest, past Stavanger. There it is colder, more snow and stronger winds, but still very lovely. The village is larger and I could not spend so much time in the wild, but I miss the land there now that we live in England.

...That sounds a lot like where I grew up, actually. I lived on a little island called Patch, just off the coast of Vale. I haven't been there in a couple years now but it was a great.

It's just not the same when you wind up in the big city.

[meadqueen]

Oh, you grew up on an island? You must enjoy sailing as well.

[guidemyway]

I'm not super great at it, but I loved riding the boats out to the main land!

[meadqueen]

Our village in England is on the shore of a river, but it's not really the same.

[guidemyway]

That's lame. Sucks when you can only really go in two directions. When I was in Atlas basically everything was frozen so there wasn't a whole lot of sailing to be had there. I know the feeling.

[meadqueen]

Oh no, that doesn't sound fun at all. Were you at least able to go ice fishing?

[guidemyway]

I didn't get a chance to give that a try. I was busy doing my dream job at the time, and found out I was pretty darn good at it too. At least for awhile.

[meadqueen]

Oh, you were doing that so young? That's amazing. I'm sorry it ended.

[guidemyway]

Yeah- I get that a lot.

As far as I know I'm on of the youngest Huntresses' around.

...And well- Yeah. It's complicated- I didn't exactly stop doing it. It just got a whole lot harder and wasn't the normal kind of work I'd say.

[meadqueen]

Ah.

[Not quite the same thing, but Randvi knows a bit about that.]

A huntress?

Oh right- I keep forgetting you guys don't have something similar around here.

Kind of like a professional monster hunter, and a mercenary wrapped into one. It's our job to protect people from the Creatures of Grimm back where I'm from.

...And the Grimm come in all different shapes and sizes, but they exclusively hunt humans for the most part.

[meadqueen]

Oh, a mercenary. [That makes sense, Randvi had dreamed of becoming a jomsviking at that age and it looks like Ruby had actually managed it for a while.]

These creatures hunt humans deliberately… you're right, we do not have such things. Maybe an individual creature or two but not a type of beast. That must be a very important job.

[guidemyway]

It is- In my world there aren't a lot of settlements outside of the four main kingdoms. Beyond their walls it's pretty essential to have one tag along while traveling or living in your village.

The Grimm have way more territory out there then we do.

[meadqueen]

That sounds horrible. [Yes, Randvi feels penned in back home in Ravensthorpe, but it's duty that holds her in place, not fear of monsters.] But it must be an exciting way of life, being a huntress.

[guidemyway]

It can be- But we find a way to make it work. Or well- We're doing best at it.

[Ruby didn't exactly appreciate just how hard it could be until she started to see the world herself. ...Now she somehow ended up being one of the leading experts on the nature of her world. And that was a strange thing all considering.]

It is- Or was- Or I guess it will be again when I get back there. I don't think I'd trade that rush, that thrill for anything else in the world.

[meadqueen]

I understand. [Randvi knows her own version of that rush, and only the threat of the complete annihilation of the Reindeer Clan had convinced her to give it up.] I hope you can return soon.

...But while I'm here. I think I'd like to think it's for a reason, and that I might be able to things at least a little better here.

I think you do, Ruby. You've been a light in the dark in this place.
