The unheated church basement will do for a mortuary. Someone finds a long table and Goodsir has La'an's poor cold corpse laid out on it, covered with a sheet.

He hasn't performed an autopsy—

—here, not yet. The deaths that have occurred so far have presented no mystery, but La'an's is something new and terrifying, and Goodsir feels he must get to the bottom of it.

"I bet that old man knows something."

Last time he made that suggestion he got told to back down, but there's only one man in Milton who gets to direct Wolfwood's actions and he's not here right now. Still, he drops his voice some, turning his lighter over and over. God he misses cigarettes.

"He's been pretty closed-mouthed this whole time, but somebody's dead. It's time for him to tell us what he knows."

Goodsir nods slowly. "Whatever he has to say—particularly if it will prevent something like this from happening again—we ought to know."

It's a relief that some people here understand the value of collecting information!

"The next time he shows his face, then," Wolfwood says, slipping his lighter back into his pocket, "let's go have a chat."

If things continue as they have been, there'll be another batch of abductees in the next few days, and the old man will arrive to feed them. When he does, they should be ready.
