Chloe smiles, feeling an unexpected rush of relief. “We did, didn't we? Thanks.”

If she didn't make questionable decisions, she wouldn't be Chloe Frazer. Still, it's nice to hear that she doesn't need to suffer for it.

“I'm not used to knowing I've got someone in my corner.”

[notarat]

It definitely is a more feelings-adjacent thing than Chloe would usually admit to. Maybe that's why Billy doesn't draw too much attention to it, or doesn't put a sappy spin on it.

(Not like he's good at sappy either, anyway.)

Instead he quietly takes it in for a moment, and then he lightly shrugs.

"That would make two of us."

Sure, there's Cornelius, but.. it's not like things have always been really smooth between them, for various reasons. It's getting a little better now since it feels like they are working towards the same goal, at least - but even then Hickey is absolutely the most unpredictable man Billy knows.

"I always learned you are the only person who can look out for yourself." It's the main thought that has been driving all of his actions back home, and even some here.

But having people on his side-- Having Chloe say before that she'd protect him, having Hickey say that he'll take care of him.. It is kind of nice, actually. He might be willing to put some trust into it for once. Even if he doesn't say that part out loud.

“Yeah,” Chloe says. She looks sombre for a moment. “Me too. I've been on my own for a long time.”

Trust is hard. Being trusted is even harder. Please, don't let it be me who fucks this up.

“I’ll try not to need any more rescuing, though.”

Maybe it's why it's so relatively easy to get along with Chloe, especially when he doesn't often get along with people. She seems to understand on some levels.

"I don't doubt it," he answers. Even though he'll still have to contemplate the feeling he got a moment ago a little more, Billy shoves it down for now, the ends of his lips instead curling up just a slight bit in amusement as he looks at her, adding: "I would not promise to help you if I thought you would get yourself into trouble too often."

It's a joke! .. Mostly. It's not like Billy would make the sort of promises he's making here with people he finds unnecessarily troublesome. But if him being together with Hickey is proving anything, it's that he's willing to put up with some trouble for the sake of people whose company he likes.

“Got to make sure you keep some time set aside for the shenanigans your husband gets up to, huh?” Chloe can't help but laugh a little. He isn't usually someone who reminds her of Elena, but this part does, a bit.

Billy huffs, and he momentarily ducks his head a little. It almost looks shy. After all, it's not like he's exactly used to getting called out over stuff like this. Mostly since people don't know about his relationship in the first place, especially not to the extent Chloe does.

"Is it that obvious I spend almost every single moment of my life cleaning up after that man?"

Thankfully he still mostly sounds amused, though now with something a little more shy and embarrassed mixed in.

It's still new to him, talking about it, but Chloe thinks it must be nice after hiding for so long. While still hiding for his own safety.

“Well, he isn't trailing mess everywhere he goes so I assumed.”

It's definitely kind of nice to be so open about stuff he's kept to himself for so long. It's enough for Billy to be smiling just the slightest bit as he talks.

"Cornelius is not as good at thinking of the consequences of his actions as he assumes himself to be." Trust him, Chloe. He's seen this play out so many times.. This is why he thinks Hickey is both the smartest and the dumbest person he knows. "I am more responsible in that regard, so it only feels natural for things to work out in this way."

God knows Hickey isn't going to be thinking about it if Billy doesn't.

"I just don't want him to get himself into trouble here. It would be a pain."

Chloe isn't great at thinking her actions through either, which might be obvious. Her friends back home would get it, though.

“Yeah, that’s fair. You've got your work cut out for you, I think.”

"You could say that."

Billy knows better than to imagine Hickey won't get into trouble in this place at all. It's kind of inevitable, and it is indeed a pain, but-- the things we do for love, right.

"I will handle that when it happens though. For now I will count my blessings." The blessings of Hickey not having done anything too wild yet.. Only to get into cannibalism next month. He jinxed it.
