The word try is very important in that statement, yes, but Bigby really has been trying! If not just because his heart breaks much more than he'd like to admit to every single time a kid moves away from him in fear when he does as much as try to touch them.
Except his attempts have apparently instead led to this - the exact opposite extreme.
"So I'm going to stop trying to be nice to them now." Yeah, he's definitely doing the Bigby equivalent of pouting right now. He's like a dog asking for a pat on the head. "No more mister nice guy."
