deadly arts and crafts day
Who: anyone with knowledge of or interest in making weapons from scratch
What: characters meeting up to exchange knowledge and make stuff
When: Some time soon after the town meeting about the forest talkers
Where: the Community Hall
Content Warnings: discussion of weapons designed to kill people and the best ways to do that
Other Notes: So! I'm not going to be replying to the comments here like a normal in-character post, because if I did that would be too many threads for me at once and I'd get overwhelmed pretty quickly. But there was enough interest in Raju's proposal at the town meeting that it seemed useful to have a central post for people to go to know what their character might learn, so this is that! This post can work as either an in-character place to thread things out, or as an out of character place to summarize what they're getting up to here, or both.
After the meeting, Raju writes his first notice on the message board in determinedly neat cursive, pinned in the middle of the board on top of whatever obviously less important message is already hanging there, helpfully titled:
Any character who can't be out in the sunlight or wouldn't be around at that time, feel free to connect with any other character who'd be there and say your character scribbled a reply on Raju's note asking to meet someone separately, or whatever.
Feel free to either write an in-character top level for others to tag into, or to write an OOC comment summarising what other characters might learn from yours. I'll put a general outline for OOC comments for anyone who wants one below:

Defensive Measures for Possible Attack
In light of the threat the forest talkers present, it's imperative we be able to construct weapons ourselves to supplement the limited amount of ammunition available. If you can make anything from the materials available in Milton and are willing to teach others, come to the Community Hall at noon for one of the next two days. Bring your own raw materials.

A. Rama Raju | OOC
Weapon(s): nothing, he's here to learn
Teaching Weapon Use: Yes, particularly the bow and arrow. Let me know if you want to either play that out at some point or handwave it. Apparently modern compound bows are easier to use because they don't require you hold the full draw weight the whole time you've got the arrow ready to go, or something? And I figure there would be at least a couple of those in the hunting supply store ready to be scavenged, so Raju's ready to give up the one he found there in favor of a wooden bow if any character does learn how to shoot from him but doesn't have the muscle strength yet to use the wooden ones very well.

kidsmaller size due to his height. He'll probably do decently despite not having experience just because he's insane at physical stuff lol but training is still very helpful. He can offer some knife fighting tips if Raju wants something in return.

He can do demanding! He tends to excel at physical stuff, so he'd probably get the hang of it pretty quickly. I imagine he can probably train himself to hit moving things fairly quickly in the upcoming weeks once he has the basics down.

Levi Ackerman // OOC
Weapon(s): He's here to learn, he's not exactly a craftsman. However he knows some things about blade maintenance and using environment/everyday objects as weapons. He could probably craft a lockpick if anyone's interested in that.
Teaching Weapon Use: He's willing! He's got like twenty years of experience brawling on the street and is especially skilled with a knife. Other than that he's good at hand to hand combat (especially persevering against bigger/stronger opponents since lol everyone's bigger than him but this could be useful for some characters!) and at using longer blades (from his ODM gear but nobody else has access to those so 🥲) and he also has some basics of firearms use and maintenance as well as (non-modern) explosives handling.
Raw Materials: Probably whatever he can scavenge around town or from hunting -- some wooden planks and sticks, strings, leather strips and bone fragments, feathers, scrap pieces that can be sharpened.
Construction: His technology is from the rough equivalent of late 1800s - early 1900s with some exceptions (like the Flying Around gear), but since he's mainly there to learn about bows and offer knife lessons it probably won't apply.
Anything else: N/A
Levi Jořdán | OOC
Weapon(s): Levi can make nothing. He could help with firearm maintenance, but that's not what we're here for
Teaching Weapon Use: He's very willing to help people learn how to handle a bow or a gun. Firearms practice won't include much actual shooting, but bows and arrows are a different matter. He's using something he scavenged from the hunting supply store but isn't very familiar with bows otherwise.
Raw Materials: He won't be bringing things at first but will freely go and fetch Stuff.
Benton Fraser | OOC
Weapon(s): Fraser can show people how to make bolas, bows and arrows, and traps.
Teaching Weapon Use: He's willing to teach people how to:
- throw a knife, hatchet, or bola
- use a compound bow, simple wooden bow, or crossbow (if one is around)
- fire, clean, and handle rifles or handguns, along with gun safety
Raw Materials: Cord and weights for bolas, strips of tanned leather, sinew, feathers, rifle
Construction: Fraser is familiar with traditional indigenous methods for making weapons as well as more modern techniques, up to 1994.
Anything else: Fraser will enjoy being around so many other handy people! He enjoys teaching and will pay attention to every small detail to ensure his students learn thoroughly. Diefenbaker will also be there, mostly lying near the fire and staying out of the way.

Ruby is also here to pet Diefenbaker because he's doing a great job helping out.

And of course Fraser will be happy to share his bolas expertise!
Re: Benton Fraser | OOC
Also i dont think he'd know what a bola is so he'll be very interested in that
Ruby Rose | RWBY
Weapon(s): So! In Ruby's world a lot of weapons generally have a long range mode, and a close range element. Her own weapon, Crescent Rose is a scythe that doubles as a sniper rifle. However all of the transformable aspects of her weapon, and the rifle function don't work here. So she'd focus on making either plain melee weapons, or regular guns instead.
She designed and forged her weapon herself back where she's from which is fairly common. So she has the experience to do it.
Teaching Weapon Use: Yes! She'd probably be better suited to teaching gun use over melee as her own fighting style was mostly suited to her own abilities back at home, so she is not quite at her peak in that sense here.
Raw Materials: Ruby's taken shop in the scrapyard at lakeside. She'll bring any metals or materials she can dig up from there. She's also tracked down a small amount of gasoline and gun powder.
She can get the forge working in the scrapyard, but keeping it fueled to use will always be the biggest challenge.
Construction: Ruby's weapons are from a world that kind of varies from modern day in some aspects to more future based in some areas. She doesn't have access to a lot of things from her world. But there's not a huge difference between the end product of her world and what's available here.
Anything else: Ruby is likely to gush over all the things other people have brought to arts and craft days. She treats weapons as a representation of who the other person is, and is just a nerd about them in general. Expect her to bother just about everyone here if they'll give her the time of day.
Randvi | OOC
Weapon(s): She can teach people how to make a bow (particularly how to make and treat the string), and arrows. This isn't really a weapon but she can also teach about building defenses like traps and barricades.
Teaching Weapon Use: She's willing to teach the bow or defending against a blunt weapon like her war hammer.
Raw Materials: She'll bring everything with her: yew branches, scavenged rope to unravel, stone and scrap metal arrowhead examples, properly sized feathers and animal sinew. Probably the hardest for characters to source on their own will be fibres for bowstrings (unless they can start growing flax somewhere) and sinew for attaching arrowheads.
Construction: 9th century Europe - a little summary of what she'd teach can be found here

First Impressions: Here's the first impressions spreadsheet -- but Crozier is generally friendly and approachable, albeit just here to quietly observe.
Anything else: He's not particularly capable with crafting anything, even if he did still have his left hand, but he wants to be supportive and he likes the idea of exchanging ideas.
