Emotionally exhausting? Eternally exhausting? Disadvantageous for his body? Who can say? Louis gingerly touches his head where the man hit him, a very human gesture. It's one of the bygone ones he's not used to doing anymore. He spent decades as a vampire who heals easily from all but the most grievous injuries.
It's different here. Louis is no fool. He knows even an ordinary dedicated human could get the jump on him—in his coffin, in a blizzard, or even at a distance with a decent gun. He's so vulnerable in this world.
"Flattery." His guard is up, and when it's up, he gets mean. He pulls his lips back to slowly flash a fanged smile. "It'll get you anywhere." So they say.
"Do you recall, Mr. Wake, when we first met? I felt like I needed to butter you up. Make nice with the neighbors, Mamaw taught me good. But the masks are off now. Monster to monster, why'd you kill him?"

Well. Neither of them are imaginary.
He turns his response over in his head. There's the Alan answer, which is to assume no responsibility. There's the real answer, which is that he just really, really wanted to. Scratch figures he'll settle on something in the middle, something that hold enough truth to stand behind if needed. Not that he's ever felt bad about murdering anyone.
"I just felt like I had to. Like something inside me was telling me, and if I didn't do it then either that voice in my head would do something to me or the other guy would before I had a chance to find out."

"You don't seem too broken up about it, fella."
This man hardly knows Louis. It stands to reason he might tell a half truth. There's no way to know.
"What did the voice sound like?"
He heard the sneer after the sky turned green, but he's not about to just tell a guy he's hearing voices. Bad enough he's been seeing things too, and not entirely within the realm of that fever...

"It sounded ... Sinister," he says, his brow furrowing as he searches for the word, trying to describe something that to most people would seem indescribable. "Like it was coming from everywhere and nowhere all at once. Like it knew me."
That's probably how Alan would word it in that annoying way of his.
As far as Scratch is concerned, he can't wait to hear it again.
