Chloe had wondered whether to go through with the harvest party once Lalo had disappeared, but as they say, the show must go on. There's still a lot worth celebrating, and people need something hopeful after the mess last month. Luckily her house had made it through everything all right.

The poster had said to wear a costume, so she's hoping to see a lot of those, and she’d recruited some people to help her put together the menu exactly to Lalo’s specifications, so unfortunately no one is safe from British Potatoes. There are even candles for the birthday cake.

Chloe herself is dressed as a sexy lumberjack, with one of Lalo’s old flannels tied in a knot under her breasts and denim cutoffs made from the jeans Kostya had gotten blood on (shh). She's got a fire roaring, because otherwise she’d freeze.

[Casper gives his hostess a warm smile and a one-armed hug, dressed in his flannel and cowboy hat, before offering up the (mostly full) bottle of wine he'd brought.] I don't think we've seen each other since you helped fill me in just after my arrival, and I apologize for that. It's a bad habit, concentrating on work instead of people.

But my name is Casper Darling, just to reintroduce myself. I wanted to thank you for throwing this together. I've needed something like this, if I'm honest.

Ah, yes. The erstwhile mycologist, right? [You’re kind of hard to forget, doc.] Looks like we match a bit, great minds think alike!

[Chloe reaches for the bottle.] Oh, lovely. It's nice to have something other than the pine stuff once in a while.

That would be me, yes. [The smile he gives is a little sheepish, and he rubs at his ear self consciously. But Chloe had been so helpful during his odd arrival here, and he really can't be mad at being accused of mycology. Even if it wasn't his main field of study.]

We do though, don't we? I hadn't really considered flannel as an option before moving here, I'm more of a wooly sweater guy myself. But having both on hand felt like a good decision, given the weather. Though I'm not quite so daring to style it like you have. Maybe in my wilder grad school days.

I like a good leather jacket, but that's not really a costume for me. [She had worn one in the Himalayas because she's crazy.]

When else can you dress like this, especially here? You've got to grab your fun when you can get it.

Well, not everyone needs to see that much of me. [He laughs, a little self conscious; he keeps fit, of course, but he's also nearly sixty. Not nearly as comfortable with himself as he used to be.]

You're right, tough. I've worn sweater vests and bow ties for the past thirty years of my life. Why not branch out a little?

[Chloe laughs too. She’ll be forty next year, to many people the expiration date for women, and she’ll probably still be doing all of this.]

I did switch to just a cardigan! Well. Sometimes, on warmer days. Layering seems to be the correct choice, in this weather. But I stopped wearing my bow tie ages ago, which I think is a sign of growth.

A sign of growth, or your fingers are too cold to tie it consistently?
