Yeah, I don't blame you for that. Can you… [How do you say it.] Do you have to eat them raw? I'm sure it'd feel a little less… like this… if you were eating a cooked meal in your house.
[She says, as she's eating raw meat next to him. At this point she's kind of had to embrace being a freak, but that doesn't mean everyone wants to.]
A shadow? You think someone was stalking you?
no subject
I— [ Cringing. So much cringing. ] I dunno. I've... I've just only even eaten it raw. S'not exactly something you really wanna bring to the dinner table though, is it?
[ Roast brains with veg and mash. Wonderful. And god— he has no room to talk, but this is just... so gross. He's trying not to look to closely at her eating. ]
Not think. I knew they were. [ He shakes his head. ] It... it, um— it was a person. Looked... just like me.
no subject
[Cooking a human brain might be a bit much but that's more because you'd know it's human than anything else.]
Oh. I haven't seen anything like that. Did it talk or anything?
no subject
[ He's.. really not wanted to, in all honesty. Thinking about brains in general is something he'd rather have far from his mind. Animal or otherwise. ]
No. Just... hung around. Nobody else could see it. It was... weird. Bad weird. [ He swallows thickly. ] It, um— it made me feel like shit.
no subject
[No offence to this kid but it seems like feeling like shit is pretty normal for him.]
Anyway, it's not you, you know that now. It's this place forcing shit on us again.
When I'm not… doing this… [Eating animals straight out of the snare.] I do a bit of trapping for Louis at the store. I bet he’d give you what you need in a way that sucks less.
no subject
[ Chloe, you have no idea just how extremely normal it is to be feeling like shit all the time for him. ]
.... Yeah.
[ He exhales it, sounds so defeated about it. Man, fuck this place. ]
Mm, sure that'll go down well. [ He jerks his head a little, his voice shifting into a mockingly cheerful tone that is... incredibly out of place for him. ] 'Hello, shopkeep! Two pounds of your finest deer brain, please!' I know this place is weird and stuff, but like... come on.
no subject
Worse than this, you reckon? If someone else who didn't have to do this had found you?
no subject
[ He's quiet for a long while, considering. What's worse? Things kicking off, things getting ugly. People getting hurt. He... he has people he knows, here. Friends. ]
... A witch hunt. [ He answers quietly. ] That's how people get hurt.
no subject
It doesn't have to be. There are other people like us, who have this power and know its downsides. We can help each other.
no subject
[ Like sure, if there's a whole bunch of them chowing down on raw rabbits and shit in the woods, that's one thing. But... zombies are a whole other thing. ]
no subject
[After all, he doesn't have the choice to eat anything else.]
no subject
You... do realise people kill people like me, yeah? Not to mention we don't have a stellar track record in media, either. [ That moment when you walk in and your baby sister's shooting up zombies in a video game. ] Zombies... evil... undead monsters. Yeah?
no subject
[He seems like a kid who’s going through it. It's not the same of course, but Chloe knows what it's like to be a teen who thinks there's something hideous and ultimately unfixable about yourself. Combined with her current situation it makes her sympathetic to what he's going through.]
no subject
[ But he falls quiet for a moment, considering it. But you don't seem like a monster to me. It sits like a stone within him. He doesn't want to be a monster, but it doesn't change the fact he is one. But— he gets it. Hickey had told him that people would see him as Kieren, it'd be the best shot he'd have when they found out about the whole 'zombie thing'. ]
I just... I just want to be me. I'm just... Kieren. [ Even with what Hickey told him, he still wants that. Even with the horrible things he's done, even when he knows he's a monster — he's just Kieren. ] But... thanks, for not thinking I'm a monster.
no subject
If you don't want to ask people, I could bring you stuff when I hunt. If you want. [She doesn't eat the brains anyway.]
no subject
Yeah, not really a habit anymore. [ Thank Christ. There's a pause, and he's taken aback at the offer. ] You'd do that? Like it's fine? I mean— do you... do you want anything back?
[ It's not exactly like he can pay her. ]
no subject
If you want ‘em regular I might charge to go out there and hunt, but I don't mind giving you stuff I already caught.
no subject
Okay. [ He nods, resigned. ] Um, I'd... really appreciate that. Thanks. I can... let you know if I need you to go out...? But just... I guess whatever you have right now's fine. I don't exactly know how much I'll need.
no subject
“I’ll drop ‘em by. Want me to walk you home?” They're both a little bloody at this point but it's fine.
no subject
... Alright. [ He nods again. ] Yeah.
[ Definitely more than a little bloody. Kieren's hesitant, moving to wipe his hands in the snow. He doesn't dare wipe at his face. Even in the dark, he's worried about wiping off his cover up mousse and someone else seeing him.
It's better than nothing, but only then he's fine to finally get to his feet to leave. ]
I think we can wrap here
