"I had meant to ask you about it, actually." Sorry, Billy, you're the only person she knows for sure both has fire powers and gets laid pretty regularly. "He's got that same fire power you do, and when he finished the first time, the whole back of the couch caught! Burned out pretty quick, but it surprised the hell out of me. Is that like... does that happen often? Do you guys need to keep a bucket of water by the bed or what?"
If Lalo is chill about it she wants to do it again. Doesn't hurt to be prepared.

So big that he can't even pretend to be busy with the sewing. His hands stop moving, and his gaze fully turns over towards her. Billy is raising the most sceptical eyebrow in the world right now, making the answer pretty obvious before he even answers. It's not the gaze of someone who has been caught about something embarrassing. It's the look of someone who's heavily judging someone else over something embarrassing.
"Let me get this clear. He finished.. and then he immediately set his couch on fire."
He says it so dryly. So, so, so dryly.
Billy shakes his head disapprovingly, and then does return to sewing. "That sounds like a man with terrible self control. You are wise to not want to further involve yourself with that."

That disapproving face from a guy who married Cornelius Hickey is a lot.
"Don't look at me like that! I had a good time!"

That's a hum of someone who is either thoroughly unconvinced or judging you so hard, Chloe.
"You had a good time," he echoes back at her, like he's trying to make her see something in those words. "You had a good time with a man you had rather specific and intimate intercourse with."
Look, judging by Chloe's talk about them having hurt each other and being into it.. It's hard to describe that in any other way! It might not be the sappy kind of intimate Billy sometimes shares with his lover, sure, but intimate all the same.
"And you wish to further involve yourself with him. Yet, at the same time, you wish for him to not have any sort of feelings for you."
He says it so calmly too. Like he's pointing out the obvious. And how ridiculous the obvious is.
"Is that an accurate summary of the situation?"

Not that he knows the guy Chloe is involved with, but.. really, Billy thinks Rorschach is definitely the scariest guy in town by far, and he was able to fend him off somehow.
It gives him a little bit of confidence. At least enough to feel like he should be able to deal with whatever man this is about as well.
Especially when keeping Chloe safe when he has the ability to do so feels fairly natural.

Something about the look in his eyes is almost a little surprised too.

Maybe it's not even surprise in return for her own surprise. Maybe he's more surprised at himself. It doesn't feel like him to say these things so easily, always concerned with saving himself, but-- it feels instinctive, somehow. Just as it had with Cornelius before. Maybe he's not quite used yet to having actual people he cares for, especially under circumstances where he can actually do anything to do them safe in the first place, rather than being powerless in every sense of the word.

“You might have noticed, but I'm not always the best at making decisions that keep me out of danger. I went into this with my eyes open, I'm sure lots of people think whatever comes from that is something I’d have coming.”
Chloe likes Billy, and he does look out for her, but he's still Victorian. Maybe he’d think she deserved whatever was coming to her for having sex at all.

Congratulations, Chloe. Yes, Billy is very Victorian, but somewhere between being so gay that he's hardly ever interacted with women or thought about them all that much and having a pretty messed up relationship dynamic himself, he's apparently not misogynistic enough to think that it'd be Chloe's fault if something happened to her in this case.

"I certainly can't imagine having those sorts of interactions with anyone, but if you are enjoying yourself, Miss Frazer.. Then who am I to judge, hm?" Okay, he's still going to judge. But more just in the same way he's constantly judging everything. At all times. "Besides, we said we would have each other's backs."

If she didn't make questionable decisions, she wouldn't be Chloe Frazer. Still, it's nice to hear that she doesn't need to suffer for it.

Instead he quietly takes it in for a moment, and then he lightly shrugs.
"That would make two of us."
Sure, there's Cornelius, but.. it's not like things have always been really smooth between them, for various reasons. It's getting a little better now since it feels like they are working towards the same goal, at least - but even then Hickey is absolutely the most unpredictable man Billy knows.
"I always learned you are the only person who can look out for yourself." It's the main thought that has been driving all of his actions back home, and even some here.
But having people on his side-- Having Chloe say before that she'd protect him, having Hickey say that he'll take care of him.. It is kind of nice, actually. He might be willing to put some trust into it for once. Even if he doesn't say that part out loud.

"I don't doubt it," he answers. Even though he'll still have to contemplate the feeling he got a moment ago a little more, Billy shoves it down for now, the ends of his lips instead curling up just a slight bit in amusement as he looks at her, adding: "I would not promise to help you if I thought you would get yourself into trouble too often."
It's a joke! .. Mostly. It's not like Billy would make the sort of promises he's making here with people he finds unnecessarily troublesome. But if him being together with Hickey is proving anything, it's that he's willing to put up with some trouble for the sake of people whose company he likes.

"Cornelius is not as good at thinking of the consequences of his actions as he assumes himself to be." Trust him, Chloe. He's seen this play out so many times.. This is why he thinks Hickey is both the smartest and the dumbest person he knows. "I am more responsible in that regard, so it only feels natural for things to work out in this way."
God knows Hickey isn't going to be thinking about it if Billy doesn't.

Billy knows better than to imagine Hickey won't get into trouble in this place at all. It's kind of inevitable, and it is indeed a pain, but-- the things we do for love, right.
"I will handle that when it happens though. For now I will count my blessings." The blessings of Hickey not having done anything too wild yet.. Only to get into cannibalism next month. He jinxed it.
