March is visibly contemplating saying yes and is not ashamed about that whatsoever.

"You're not giving a straight answer," he points out, brows raising, not giving a straight answer either. "You're pretty good at swerving."

“Straight’s not my strong suit,” Chloe agrees even though that isn't what he meant. “I told you I could do it. Feels weird as hell right now, though.”

Holland March files that under 'Extremely Interesting Things to Talk About When They're Both Drunk' and can't help the slight grin.

"Must. Anyone get anything outta you?"

Chloe shrugs. “Nothing serious. Lalo made me rate 'cute boys' earlier like it's middle school.”

March is looking at Chloe expectantly for her to elaborate, brows raised. Lalo, he realizes, is very smart. He should have done that. Shit.

“There are way too many men here, by the way. Not that you guys aren't fun to look at, but it’d be nice to have some variety, you know?” She’d stopped at top ten because if she’d named every guy she's met they'd have been there all day.

"Don't dash my hopes. Maybe the next batch of Interlopers will prove you wrong, right?"

“You never know! It's always been pretty guy-heavy, though.” Chloe shrugs. “Maybe Enola doesn't want any competition.”

"Make out with Enola." March's response is immediate.

“Oh, she's cute but no thanks.” Chloe makes a face. “I still think it's her who did all this to us.”

"You don't think she's helping us?" Oooh, that's new.

“Oh, she's helping us all right,” Chloe says sourly. “We’re her little footsoldiers against the Darkwalker.”

March's eyes roll, not at Chloe but at the mention of soldiers.

"Wish we had the option of signing up."

There's a beat, small and quiet. Chloe's got that truth serum in her still. Maybe he doesn't have to poke and prod about something that doesn't matter. Maybe it can be something serious.

"You think we're gonna win?"

“I’d think an American guy from the seventies might know a thing or two about the draft.”

“I don't think we win or lose anything, unless you’d attribute a win in chess to the pieces. All Enola’s got to do to not lose is make sure there's at least one Interloper here breathing.”
