"...I dunno. Somewhere warmer with reliable electricity, at least. Maybe a fancier place, but if I stayed in a resort or something for more than like a day or two I'd start to feel awkward and out of place. Wh--" Nope. He cuts himself off before asking where she'd go. He promised no questions even if he's not sure how this could lead to her saying too much.

Chloe shrugs. “I’d just want to go home. Never thought I'd be so attached to it, but I am.”

"Yeah, that's probably what most people would say."

“I always wanted to get away when I was there, but now I think about my friends back there pretty often.”

"Mine is...there's not really anything left there. For me or anyone."

A lot of people seem to have come here from way worse circumstances than her.

He shrugs, "It's fine. My world seems to have issues compared to a lot of other ones. Not that it really matters here.

"Though I guess if you're asking where I'd go if I had the choice, it wouldn't be back there." Maybe one of those worlds where kids can't be drafted.

“Maybe you could stay here. Just go to a nicer country.” Unless this whole world is like this now.

"Assuming the rest of the world isn't also some sort of hell hole that'd work."

“Yeah, I'm kind of hoping it's localized to just the island.” Who knows, though?

"I wonder if we'll ever find a way off of it. I guess if none of the cars work a boat isn't going to either."

“It won't be as easy but we could build a raft or something.” Unless there's an impenetrable wall of fog out there, maybe.

"There are a lot of trees here, shouldn't be a problem getting logs to make one." He pauses for a moment then adds, "I wouldn't do it as soon as we find the ocean. Who knows what sort of monsters might be out there." There was a lake monster, sea monsters weren't out of the question.

“Yeah, we need to make it to the port first. See if anyone else made it out.” She doesn't have high hopes for the tower diary guy but it would be nice.

He nods, "That state of things there should give us some insight. Though we might want to send...something out onto the ocean before going ourselves."

“Yeah, I agree. I don't even know what ocean that’s supposed to be. Pacific?” It can make a difference!

He shrugs. Oceans were all basically the same, right? Its not like he ever expected to be on or even see one. "I'm more worried about something like the beast in the lake being in there. There could be tons of them in that much water."

“I wonder if the camp office has any other folklore stuff.” Chloe doesn't know enough about early cultures in this area to know if they'd believed in sea monsters, though if they'd used it for much of anything the odds are good. “Or the library maybe. That thing in the lake was a local legend.”

"Yeah, it did have stuff on the lake monster. If it doesn't maybe somewhere closer to shore or whatever port they have will. I can look around in the library too, I haven't tried to look up something like that before."

“Maybe. Might be a museum or cultural centre around somewhere too, if we can get past Lakeside.”

Silverpoint seems like a good candidate for that.

"Oh yeah, a bigger city or a port would be a good place for that. This place was at least sort of for tourists, so I bet they had something."

“Yeah. We haven't seen an airport and I'm assuming the train is just for the mine so they must have all come in through the port.”

"If it's a small island it might just be ships, too. But either way we haven't gotten that far out yet."
